LECTURE 2: CHOOSING AND NARROWING A TOPIC This lesson concentrates on defining and narrowing a topic as well as testing your idea's marketability. Includes information on how to avoid competition with similar titles.
LECTURE 3: SOURCES This session focuses on how to find and evaluate the accuracy of sources to use in your research. Includes how to identify source bias and the difference between primary and secondary sources.
LECTURE 4: MORE ON SOURCES This lesson discusses using interviews and graphic materials as primary sources. Includes how to prepare for and conduct an interview as well as where to find a variety of photographic resources.
LECTURE 5: THE FIRST DRAFT Learn to judge age appropriateness of specialized vocabulary and facts as well as the use of fiction techniques to create an interesting, readable manuscript.
LECTURE 6: REWRITING The lesson includes information on generating a hook and a strong ending as well as grabbing the editor's attention with an intriguing title. Includes examples from published works.
LECTURE 7: EXTRAS TO HELP YOUR WORK SELL This lesson discusses extras to help your manuscript stand out from the slush--sidebars, puzzles, and how-tos--and how to complete a marketing strategy for your book-length manuscript.
LECTURE 8: COVER AND QUERY LETTERS This lesson focuses on what information should and should not go into this all important letter.
Writing Children's Nonfiction costs only $80.00 for 8 classes offered over 4 weeks. Each class consists of a detailed e-mail "lecture" with accompanying handouts and an assignment. I read through each student's assignment several times and then return detailed comments and suggestions on possible ways to improve the work.
